The Masculine and the Feminine

Consider this quote:

“The King died and then the Queen died” is a story. “The King died and then the Queen died of grief” is a plot. - EM Forster

Masculine elements of a story are external. They move the story forward. They represent action. They represent what happened. The feminine elements are internal: Emotions, motivation, etc. Both should represent roughly equal parts to a story.

Purely masculine movies appeal to men. And similarly for purely feminine stories. Think of who buys pornography and who buys romance novels. Who watches “chick flicks”? And who watches action-filled movies? Both are considered trash.

It is a lie for someone to kill 20 people in an action movie with no consequences.

Films and books that are more feminine tend to do better among critics and intellectuals. Not to the masses.
